2014 NFL MVP Odds & Prediction

With the 2014 NFL regular season fast approaching, today we are going to take a look at the NFL MVP odds (top 3) as well as my prediction on whom I think will take the top prize!

1. Peyton Manning3/1 – Last year’s MVP award winner (the 5th MVP award of his career) , who led the Denver Broncos to a runner-up finish in the Super Bowl, it’s no surprise he’s at the top of the list.  Last season Manning threw for 5,477 yards and 55 tds with only 10 ints. This season he’ll be without his top target Eric Decker (signed with the Jets as a free agent in the offseason) but he’ll still have two great targets in wide receivers Demaryius Thomas and Wes Welker. He’ll also have up and coming tight end target Julius Thomas. The Broncos added receiver Emmanuel Sanders to the mix for this season so he may become a favorite of Manning’s in the short passing game. His age, 38, may soon start to work against him, but I think he’s got at least another big season or 2 in front of him.

2. Aaron Rodgers6/1 – Due to an injury, Rodgers only played in 9 games last season. He threw for 2,536 yards and 17 tds with 6 ints. He’s back healthy this season. His favorite receivers Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb are both still with the team so he’ll be comfortable with the targets he’s throwing to. The emergence of 2nd year running back Eddie Lacy also should be a factor for a good performance from Rodgers as the opposing defenses only plan can no longer be just to stop the Packers quarterback.

3. Drew Brees8/1 – For the 4th season in a row and 8th in the past 9 seasons Brees played the full 16 games. Managing to stay healthy has been a key ingredient in him being able to throw for strong numbers in a long career. Last season he threw for 5,162 yards 39 tds with 12 ints. It was the 6th straight season he’s thrown for 34 or more tds. Wide receiver Marques Colston and tight end Jimmy Graham both will continue to be Bree’s favorite targets. He’ll also have 2nd year wideout Kenny Stills and exciting (and possibly electrifying) rookie receiver Brandin Cooks to throw to. Cooks could become a big reason why Brees will throw for astronomical numbers yet again.

Prediction – I’ve listed only the top 3 because I think that’s as far as I need to go since my predicted winner is among the top 3 in odds. In what may be a bit of a surprise I’m going with Aaron Rodgers grabbing the MVP hardware this season. I believe Nelson will continue to be his top target and Cobb will again make some exciting and huge plays. However, I think the real factor in Rodgers being able to put up MVP numbers this season will be 2nd year running back Lacy. Prior to last season opposing defenses were solely focused on stopping Rodgers because they knew if they did that the Packers offense would come to a grinding halt. With Lacy having such a strong rookie season the defenses now have to worry about the Packers having a running game which will only help Rodgers shred the defenses.
