The Kentucky Derby takes place in the USA this Saturday, May 6th. The race is setting up to be a great one this year with two clear favourites heading into the race, and plenty of horses considered contenders with morning line odds of 10-1 or better. It’s really anyone’s guess as to which horse will win on Saturday, which makes it all the more interesting from a betting perspective.
The morning line odds were released this morning, but I expect those odds to move significantly on race day with Forte (3-1) and Tapit Tricer (5-1) as the two favourites according to the morning line, and Angel of Empire (8-1), Practical Move (10-1), Derma Sotogake (10-1), Two Phil’s (12-1) and Kingsbarns (12-1) the other top contenders.

My Pick
I will be betting on Forte on Saturday. He’s a proven winner that was the favourite at most sportsbooks before the morning line was released.
Forte has won his last five races, including the Florida Derby at the beginning of April and the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile last November. He’s ran the 1 1/8 mile distance before, winning the Florida Derby last month in a time of 1:49.37. He’s a horse that finds a way to win, which is why I like him to come out on top in this big field on Saturday.

As you can see, Forte had a ton of speed down the stretch, winning a close race where he was boxed in before heading down the stretch. I’ve been impressed with this horse and I think he continues his winning ways at the Derby.
